Luther's Catechism and Explanation

Are you a young Lutheran getting ready to confirm your faith?  Are you a life-long member of a Lutheran congregation who would like to review the pillars of the faith upon which you grew up?  Are you new to the Lutheran church and eager to learn more about Lutheran doctrine (teachings)?  Are you a non-Lutheran curious about what we teach and believe?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then this resource is for you.  This page contains a link to the Small Catechism, Martin Luther's indispensable treasure of basic Christian doctrine.  Click here, or the Catechism to the right to begin reading.

What is the Catechism?

A catechism is book of instruction, usually in the form of questions and answers.

Luther’s Catechism is brief teaching tool written by Dr. Martin Luther in 1529.

It was actually designed for families to share together at home to emphasize the basic teachings of the Christian faith, in a simple way.

The Catechism sums up Christian teaching by dividing it into the following Six Chief Parts:

The Ten Commandments
The Creed
The Lord’s Prayer
Confession
The Sacrament of Holy Baptism
The Sacrament of the Altar (Holy Communion)
